Temple of the Blessed Virgin of Succour, known as ‘La Rotonda’

Piazza XX Settembre, 37 Rovigo

An iconic symbol of the city of Rovigo, the Church of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso fascinates with its peculiar regular octagonal plan and sumptuous decorations. Begun in the late 16th century to a design by Francesco Zamberlan, a pupil and collaborator of Andrea Palladio, it is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary and stands between Piazzale del Soccorso and Piazza XX Settembre, close to the ancient city walls.

The interior is a riot of elegant decoration: spectacular ‘canvases’ by leading exponents of 18th century Veneto figurative culture alternate with austere sculptures and ornamental elements. The bell tower is the work of Baldassarre Longhena.

An artistic unicum, a treasure chest of art in which faith, refined architecture and a sumptuous pictorial cycle come together.
