Mesola Castle

A historical and cultural landmark in the area

The Este Castle of Mesola, symbol of the city, is one of the most important historical and cultural buildings in the Po Delta.

Here, the Duke of Ferrara Alfonso II d'Este had this new manor built at the mouth of the Po, the first point of a plan to create a settlement of exceptional dimensions in an extremely strategic area between the river and the Adriatic Sea. According to the plan, it was not only to create a functional territorial coordination centre for the exploitation of the land made cultivable following the Great Land Reclamation, but also to erect the first complexes for a new urban agglomeration, equipped with a port, in order to compete with the nearby Republic of Venice.

The heart of the complex is the ducal palace: a majestic brick building characterised by four corner towers arranged diagonally. The building stands on a scarp base bordered at the bottom and at the top by two marble kerbs. Three orders of windows open along the façades. The crowning of the four corner towers is graceful with cornices and stately battlements, and around the palace, enclosed with a porticoed perimeter, is a semi-octagonal courtyard.

Testifying to the design of the last Lord of Ferrara is this splendid castle, built between 1578 and 1584 by Marcantonio Pasi. Inside, art exhibitions, nature shows, and various events with historical, cultural and recreational content are constantly hosted.
